Salt Lake City, Utah – September 2, 2003 – The Utah Commission of Criminal and Juvenile Justice (CCJJ), a branch of the Governor’s Office, is working with DoxTek in collecting and processing Utah Crime Victimization Surveys through the use of less-paper technologies.
Over the last few months, CCJJ has used a DoxTek solution to scan 2,170 multi-page surveys. The results of the survey will be used to give policy makers a better understanding of Utah’s perception of community safety as well as the occurrence of crime—reported and unreported.
“Through the use of scanning and indexing technologies, we were able to save between 120 to 160 hours this year compared to the last Victimization Survey we processed two years ago,” said Mike Haddon, director of research and data, CCJJ.
CCJJ’s imaging system consists of a document scanner and scanning software. The scanner takes a digital picture of the survey and the software literally reads the information contained in the scanned image, converting the image into simple data.
To ensure the survey data collected is accurate, a validation process has been included in CCJJ’s imaging system.
“If the scanning software finds inconsistencies within the survey, such as a half bubbled circle or stray marks, the individual operating the system will be notified and have an opportunity to validate the software’s results,” said Brandon Groom, DoxTek’s chief technology officer.
Once the surveys have been converted from paper-based information into electronic data, CCJJ can more easily apply business and statistical rules to interpret the surveys.
“Technology has definitely helped us process the victimization surveys quickly and I am confident in the results,” said Haddon.
